The lackluster minds behind Donald Trump’s campaign have come up with a plan to appeal to millennial women, and it’s basically to blame Hillary Clinton for her husband’s infidelity. In an attempt to win the demographic, which Trump historically has not done well with, the campaign plans to bring up Bill Clinton’s past sex scandals and to assert that his actions reflect Hillary Clinton’s character.
This strategy is to be led by- you guessed it- men. Specifically, Campaign CEO Steve Bannon, Deputy Campaign Manager David Bossie and Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner.
“We’re going to turn him into Bill Cosby,” is a real thing Bannon said to Bloomberg Businessweek. “He’s a violent sexual predator who physically abuses women who he assaults. And she takes the lead on the intimidation of the victims.”
Straying from the point for a moment, this statement not only ignores the remarks Trump made bragging about sexually assaulting women, but it belittles the sexual assault victims of Bill Cosby.
But back to the point; regardless of your opinions of Bill Clinton, what’s important to remember here is that he is not running for president. Blaming Hillary Clinton for her husband’s infidelity is blatantly sexist and is a tactless attempt to hold her responsible for something that happened without her knowledge. Bill Clinton’s sex scandal from the 90s has absolutely no bearing on whether or not Hillary Clinton is fit to be the president in 2016.
Also, according to The Huffington Post, this strategy has been proven to fail in the past. In 2000, while considering a Senate run, Rudy Giuliani shared the same ideas with a focus group. Voters reportedly reacted extremely negatively to the concept.
It’s completely understandable that the focus group in 2000 didn’t approve of aggressively attacking a candidate’s spouse in an attempt to discredit the candidate themselves, especially when that candidate is a woman. It alienates women voters and feeds into the sexist ideology that wives are responsible for their husband’s infidelity.
So this November 8 please remember, both candidates have discussed sexual assault during their campaigns. But while Hillary Clinton did so by proposing a plan to combat sexual assault on college campuses, Donald Trump did so by boasting about his own experiences assaulting women.
