The New York Times, Weekend Edition

by Team Intern

You may remember Tara McPherson, artist-cum-bassist of The New York Times from a past issue of BUST. If this name only conjures the seminal newspaper, here’s a refresher:

New York Times hold an MFA, a Screen Actor’s Guild Card, a Congressional Press Pass, and have illustrated for Dark Horse and DC Comics.

New York Press says New York Times reflect “the Kill Rock Stars back catalog… without crossing over into dated or nostalgic territory.” Pop Tarts Suck Toasted says, “Lead singer Rebecca Roulette has the kind of voice that sounds like its yearning to get out the emotions she’s feeling. It’s powerful and raw, yet somehow remains tender and very feminine. That’s complemented well by the rest of the band with pounding rhythms and blistering guitar riffs that push the music to new heights.” Filter magazine says New York Times sound like Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Jonathan Lethem describes the band’s version of his song, “Monster Eyes,” as “kind of like a little hit song of the mind. There ought to be a hook, and those guys did find one.

Check them out at their free show at Fontana’s (105 Eldridge St., NY NY) on Saturday, April 19, starting 9:00 p.m.
