Since the last event curated by Jill Sternheimer, I’ve been praying and hoping for another Girl Group show. I am crazy about doo-wop and the Girl Group sound so I jumped at the chance to review the newest Girl Group Spectacular at B.B. King. Before I even got there, I knew it would be great.
On the day of the show, it definitely did not disappoint! I made sure to dress to the nines in my Girl Group attire and raised my bouffant to new heights. Sufficient to say, I got a lot of comments throughout the night, mostly to remark on how my friend and I were the youngest ones there.
The group of legendary ladies included Maxine Brown, Baby Washington, Tony Wine and members of The Toys, The Raindrops, Reparata and the Delrons, The Jaynettes, The Exciters, and The Cookies. It was certainly a talented group! They sang all their hits and sang them incredibly. On stage, you could see the admiration and camaraderie between the ladies, which was amazing to witness. They were all a part of this very special time in music and each of them contributed something wonderful. Here are a few videos of the hits that they played (in order)!
The Toys “Lovers Concerto” (1965)
Barbara Harris of The Toys was probably one of my favorites of the night. She danced, sang, and looked so happy to be there. I loved it! Each singer wore something stage-worthy and my review notes just describe her as a “black and gold diva of fabulousness!”
The Raindrops “The Kind of Boy You Can’t Forget” (1963)
I was in my seat dancing to this one!
Reparata and the Delrons “Whenever a Teenager Cries” (1964)
I actually didn’t know this song when I heard it and, since the show, it’s now been on repeat the past couple of days.
The Jaynettes “Sally Go Round the Roses” (1963)
This is the second time I’ve seen Louise Murray of The Jaynettes perform and I always find her so endearing. The first time around, she seemed slightly nervous, but this time, she became a real diva with her glittery dress and fantastic voice.
Baby Washington “That’s How Heartaches Are Made” (1963)
Baby Washington’s songs were slow and incredibly soulful.
The Exciters “Tell Him” (1962)
Lily Walker of The Exciters was so charming on stage. She was super lively and you could tell she was having a blast.
The Cookies “Chains” (1962)
At this point of the night, everyone loosened up and seemed to be having an amazing time, performers and audience members alike. The stage looked like a big party!
Maxine Brown “We’ll Cry Together” (1968)
Maxine Brown ended the night with this soulful number that made me want to cry that the night was over.
