The Resistance Of Alternate Government Twitter Accounts

by Elissa Sanci

How do you get President Trump to notice you when he goes out of his way to make sure you’re silenced? The answer, for those claiming to be employees of the National Park Service and other silenced government agencies, is to play in Trump’s own arena: Twitter.

After Trump’s administration curtailed the flow of information to the Environmental Protection Agency’s Twitter account on Jan. 19, the Badland National Park took matters into their own hands by tweeting what I can only imagine keeps Trump awake at night, tossing and turning in his gold-plated bed: basic, scientifically proven facts about climate change. Of course, they were deleted, but instead of going down quietly, the parks swung back in the form of a rogue twitter account, aptly named AltUSNatParkService.

The AltUSNatParkService account, self-described as “the Unofficial #Resistance team of U.S. National Park Service,” sends out snarky tweets that fulfill the desire to diss Trump while tweeting out facts about climate change.

But what started with Badland National Park’s censorship has now grown to encompass more than 35 resistance accounts, what Digital Advocacy Strategist Alice Stollmeyer has named #Twistance, a combination of the words resistance and Twitter. The accounts are unofficial and some state they have no affiliation with the U.S. federal science agencies they’re parodying.

The resistance Twitter accounts are spreading facts about global warming in an effort to keep the conversation that Trump would like to stifle flowing, and people are listening —@AltUSNatParkService now has 1.26 million followers, nearly doubling in followers in only two days.

Although we’ll never who is really behind these hilarious and informative accounts (@RogueNASA, I’m looking at you), one message is painstakingly clear: President Trump, no matter how hard you may try, you cannot silence the truth.
