Recalling 1993 Finds Crazy Cool Use for Pay Phones

by Melissa Coci

This year, it’s all about 1993. As BUST celebrates its 20th anniversary, New York City also pays homage to one of the “freshest” years ever!

In collaboration with The New Museum’s exhibition “NYC 1993: Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star,” ad agency droga5 has turned all the payphones in Manhattan into your own ultra cool history lesson.

By simply dialing 1 -(855)- FOR-1993 (toll-free!) you will be time-warped back to 1993.  A New York native will describe what life was like  20 years ago, in the very area you are standing in!

This video will tell you more:

Disappointingly, of the 53 people featured in this exhibition spin-off, only ten of them are of the female variety. So bonus points if you manage to call up one of them!

Some of the fab females featured include:

Jennifer Gonnerman, a highly-regarded journalist currently writing for New York magazine. In 2004, she released the book Life on the Outside: The Prison Odyssey of Elaine Bartlett. The book influenced New York’s legislators to reform the notoriously strict Rockefeller drug laws.

Abby Moser. Moser spent most of the 90’s creating the documentary “Grrrl Love and Revolution: Riot Grrrl NYC.” The film documents the feminist punk movement and its influence in New York.

Get in on this 1993 love and rediscover the joys of a pay phone-how old school!
