Meet Your Maker: 5 Questions For Jenny McWilliams and Jonny Boccard Of Better Off Spread

by Brenda Pitt

You haven’t had peanut butter until you’ve had one of Jenny and Jonny’s party-in-your-mouth spreads. Using the most excellent organic ingredients, the creative couple whips up one-of-a-kind nut butters like Enter Cinnaman and Every Rosemary Has Its Thorn. Their company Better Off Spread will take your PB&J to an epic level, and we could not be more thrilled to have them as one of our vendors at our BUST Magazine Holiday Craftacular & Food Fair!

Tell us about yourself!

We are Jenny & Jonny and our company is Better Off Spread. We make small-batch, handcrafted nut butter spreads in a variety of sweet, savory and spicy flavors. Our spreads are always made with the best ingredients we can find. We don’t add any oils, fats, preservatives or sugars to them, just natural ingredients combined to make freaking awesome flavors. They are all made in Brooklyn, using organic, GMO-free nuts. Many of them are vegan and gluten-free and straight up good for you!

How did you get started?

Jenny got her start in the city over a decade ago (making peanut butter- NO JOKE) at a West Village cafe. After many (lame) years in the ad world, she’s getting back to her nut-grinding roots. Jonny worked at his family’s Italian food store on Long Island since he was a punk-ass teen, until moving to Brooklyn and becoming a barber.

What’s inspiring you right now?

Right now we’re inspired by “Christmas Wrapping” by The Waitresses. It pretty much stays on repeat in our house until December 25th.

How did you get started?

We got our start basically by throwing ideas (flavors) at the wall and seeing what stuck. We have some great mentors that steered us in the right direction and are incredibly lucky to have and have made such helpful friends. There was a lot of trial and error and a HUGE learning curve, but really we just went for it. NO FEAR.

Any advice for those starting out in the handmade industry?

Our advice would be reach out to people and don’t be afraid to ask for help. More often than not, people are willing to share their experiences and what they’ve learned. You will be tired. You will be overwhelmed. You will maybe want to throw in the towel. But don’t! That’s what booze and friends are for! Have fun and get drunk and tie that towel around your neck to turn it into a cape because YOU’RE SUPERMAN/WOMAN!

What are you most looking forward to at the BUST Magazine Craftacular and Food Fair this year?

Looking forward to spreading some holiday cheer with our fellow BUST vendors! And we’re pretty pumped about the SNARR Pooch Room.
