If you like Broad City, or other lady-driven web series, you will love Lonelygirl48. It was dreamt up by Brooklyn-based comedian , who has been featured on SNL and has won awards at the Boston Comedy Festival and Palm Beach International Film Festival for the full-length LonelyGirl48. BUST was lucky enough to talk to the brains behind the web series and ask her a couple of questions.
BUST: How did you think of the idea for the web-series?
KC: I think my aversion to dating led me to write the LonelyGirl48 web series. People are always asking me, “Why don’t you just date around? Go online! Get on Tinder!” I’d rather have a toenail removed. I really value my time. Between working, writing, doing shows, making videos, and trying to maintain relationships with my friends and family, I have very few free nights. So when I’m free, the last thing I want to do is get dressed up and try to sell myself to someone I’m not even sure I like.
Lonelygirl48 started as a 20-minute short film. The premise was me trailing a guy around the city after he blew me off and then my friend confronting him like a criminal investigation in order to scare him into giving her info. We realized though, it worked really well in a shorter format, so we cut it down to a web series. The second episode idea is really just a fantasy of mine. I would love it if my friends would shake down my love interests. It’d save me a lot of time.
BUST: On a scale of 1 to 10, how fun was it to work with all female actors on this series?
KC:I love working with a big group of girls. It’s like high school, but with a purpose. Vicky and I are both comics, so we have a large network of creative, smart gals at our disposal. The best thing about making the series is the opportunity to collaborate. Stand-up is an isolating craft. You work on your own to find and develop your voice, but there’s not necessarily one path or easy way to find your stand-up voice. It has to develop over time. So once you’ve found it, making videos and collaborating with others is a great way to showcase it and flex another comedic muscle.
BUST: Do you consider yourself a feminist?
KC: Do I think people should be considered equal regardless of their gender? Yes, absolutely.
