Hold On To Your Water Wings, Desert Sharks Has A New EP!

by Tess Duncan

Desert Sharks are a four-piece surf (who woulda guessed?) punk band from Brooklyn. They’ve got a brand spankin’ new EP that hits the Internet shelves today via their Bandcamp. “Sister Cousins,” recorded at Converse Rubber Tracks Studio, is an EP that keeps it short and not-so-sweet, but in a good way. They stay snarky with lines like “I’m gonna burn this neighborhood right to the ground/ So I never have to worry about seein’ you around” on “Feel Bad.” I’m digging their garage rock’n’roll vibe, which is slightly reminiscent of California sisters Bleached mixed with the ‘90s feel of legends like The Breeders. Desert Sharks’ sound is generally less rough around the edges than what you might expect from garage rock bands (i.e. the fuzzed out Ty Segall). Their pop hooks and catchy lyrics had me at first listen (see “I Know What I Want”). They get bonus points in my book for hilariously rad EP cover art.

Head over to their Bandcamp to download the EP, but be on the lookout for “Sister Cousins” on vinyl in March. Don’t miss out on their release show this Thursday, January 10th at Shea Stadium for just $7! The killer lineup includes Hard Nips, Hippy, and Heliotropes and the show starts at 8pm. AND these gals are so nice that they’re passing out free download codes of the release at the show. Free sweet tunes for everyone!
