Hey D.C.! Celebrate the International Day of the Girl Tonight!

by Amy Bucknam

FAIR Girls is a wonderful organization that works to prevent exploitation of girls and end sex trafficking in Bosnia, Montenegro, Serbia, Russia, Uganda, and the United States.  FAIR stands for “Free, Aware, Inspired, Restored,” which is exactly what these young survivors of prostitution and violence become.  The name, according to their site, “reflects our ongoing commitment to providing girls around the world the chance to live happy, healthy, empowered lives.”

In response to the U.N.’s declaration of the first ever International Day of the Girl, FAIR Girls teen advisors drafted a proclamation that prioritizes girls’ issues in Washington D.C., where the home office is located. In response, Councilman Jack Evans has officially declared October 11th the D.C. Day of the Girl!

If you’re in the D.C. area, be sure to join in tonight’s festivities and celebrate the girls of D.C. and the world.  There will be performances by talented young women from all over the city, including 13-year-old activist and actress Victoria Pannell.  The event will showcase youth performing arts groups as well as the achievements, stories, and talents of local girls.

JewelGirls is another project of the organization that promotes economic empowerment for FAIR Girls survivors. Handcrafted jewelry made by teen artisans all over the world will be on sale at the event.

So, come celebrate the world’s first Day of the Girl a day early at NYU Washington D.C.’s Constance Milstein and Family Global Academic Center (1307 L St. NW) tonight from 6 to 8 PM. And if you can’t make it to DC, celebrate tomorrow–wherever you are!
