Hear Adele’s New (and Very Old-School) ‘Bond’ Theme!

by Charlotte Dow

With the new James Bond film, Skyfall, opening in theatres on November 9th, it’s time for a new jam to accompany it. As one of the most successful artists to come out of the UK, Adele was the obvious choice to sing the signature theme song for this installment of the franchise. And of course, her classic lady-crooner sound works perfectly with the classy feel of the Bond films. So why haven’t I melted into a pool of my own tears, as I usually do within the first fifteen seconds of an Adele song?

The song has a sweeping orchestral arrangement, but doesn’t have the lyrics to back it up. The words that Adele sings don’t tell me anything about the story of the film. Yeah, Bond will “stand tall at Skyfall”…but what is Skyfall? Guess we’ll have to see the film to find out.

The melody drags and isn’t nearly as catchy as some of the other classic Bond tunes. Plus, Adele just doesn’t bring the same vocal power she does in her other hit power ballads. This may be because she’s still recovering from some vocal trouble that caused her to cancel performances earlier in the year.

Despite the lackluster theme song, I’m still excited to see the film and ready for some post-pregnancy tunes from Adele whenever she’s ready to get back in the studio.

What do you think of the song? “Skyfall” is now available on iTunes.
