Help Support ‘Black Girl in the R.O.K.’ Web Series Campaign

by Gwen Berumen

Former BUST intern Niesha Davis sets off to her next big adventure – a 6 episode webseries. The series entitled Black Girl in the R.O.K. (Republic of Korea) follows recent college graduate Janae on her move from the States to South Korea to teach English. Davis tells us that the series will touch on matters such as race relations, workplace relations, dating as a black girl in the R.O.K, and culture shock. Media representation is absolutely necessary – there is a market for it and it exposes previous biases and erasure. This is a story that has never been seen before, and that’s something that many writers and creators should opt for.

Davis herself is currently residing in the R.O.K. She is a writer and actress and graduated with a degree in Theater and Literary Studies from The New School. She hopes that this project creates a dent in all of the systemic erasure of black women. Black women only account for 2% of the starring roles in Hollywood films, and, beyond that, Davis says that “there is a distinct lack of variety in the types of roles and portrayals of black women on television, in film, and in mainstream media. I want to create a series that showcases a type of black womanhood not often seen, an African-American woman traveling and living abroad.”

Davis has started a campaign on Indiegogo in order to get this project funded. She needs $5,000 by August 22nd for all the necessary production and post-production costs in order to get this project off on its feet. If the internet can fund a dude to make potato salad, then they can sure as hell fund this.

If you can’t donate, then share, share, share! Social media clout is almost like money right? Either way, help out the very talented Davis put this show into fruition.
