The all-female bartending competition known as Speed Rack is taking over Los Angeles for one night only. Speed Rack was created by Ivy Mix and Lynette Marrero of the New York Chapter for LUPEC (Ladies United for the Preservation of Endangered Cocktails), which works to collect drink recipes that were thought to be endangered or extinct. (Their mission is also to “dismantle the patriarchy, one drink at a time.”) Top female bartenders compete in timed competitions at Speed Rack, a one-of-a-kind battle that highlights the top women in the industry. Speed Rack launched a ten-city tour in October to benefit breast cancer, and all the proceeds from the Los Angeles event will go to breast cancer education and prevention. Speed Rack aims to raise $75,000 before its national competition in New York City in May 2012, when the ultimate Miss Speed Rack will be crowned. If you are in the area, this is a boozy must-see. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door.
