Canadian author Margaret Atwood’s three part “speculative fiction” series, MaddAddam, will be turned into an HBO series by director Darren Aronofsky. The series consists of three novels: Oryx and Crake, The Year of the Flood, and MaddAddam. The trio follows various characters in a world where a flood has wiped out most of mankind and those remaining are left to survive in society run by corporate operatives rather than any state-sanctioned government.
Atwood is set to serve as a consulting producer, while Aronfsky will be executive producer and possibly director. Random House Canada tweeted the following:
All I can say is that I’m really looking forward to how the project turns out. HBO is pretty keen on snatching up these fantasy/sci-fi books and transforming them into popular and (mostly) well done shows. The premium network has signed a three-year deal with Aronofky’s production company Protozoa Pictures, and has the Atwood collaboration set as the first project. With these two working together, and HBO’s recently glowing track record, we are hopefully in store for a dazzling production worthy of their mutual creative genius.
