COMICON’S HEARTBEAT

by Jennifer Juniper Stratford

From it’s origins to it’s core, Comicon’s heart lies in the attendance and participation of the teenagers. Technologies have provided them with the ability to find interests beyond what is readily available to them in mainstream American media. In replacement of sagas such as Twilight they have sought out more sophisticated supernatural tales from Japan like Bleach, Death Note, and Hellsing. After spending an afternoon with them, I wished I was a teenager again, even after considering all the angst and awkwardness I’d have to live through. I’m curious to see what kind of adults they will make and I’m really excited about it.

Leon Magnus from Tales of Destiny.

Light Yagami and L of Death Note

They choose Deathsycthes and Spears over Hannah Montana.

Their aunts made their costumes. This is their 5th Comicon.

As I photographed this couple, some others wanted in the picture.

Then as they joined, more wanted in.

and then more….

Until suddenly all the Cosplay kids in the room made one giant cuddle.

Her sign says Killer Sentient Sand. My favorite obscure costume.

Pikachu’s date is a zombie shooter. RAD!

Save me from waiting in more lines at Comicon.

Whenever I see a youngster dressed in a Star Trek the Next Generation uniform,
I get kind of teary. I think he made the vulcan sign because he thought it would make a good picture. This young man is going to turn out great!

Seeing a kid in a DS9 Uniform is even greater. DS9 isn’t exactly the most accessible show. Perhaps he will become a peacemaker.

She was dressed as Dejiko but the Con was nearly over and was returning to Mexico.

The sign reads “Free High/Low fives if you think Twilight shouldn’t have ever been at Comicon in the first place”.

As I was walking toward him I was screaming , “You win!!”
