Buffy Writers Reunite, Are Predictably Awesome

by Mary Grace Garis

Though it’s easy to get emotionally invested with fictional characters – Harry Potter World was built with the premise in mind – it’s the writers we need to thank for breathing life into each character. Sure enough, when the Buffy the Vampire Slayer staff was recently reassembled, they proved themselves to be as awesome as Buffy, Xander, Willow, Anya and Tara. But not Riley. Never Riley. Riley was the worst.

The staff includes the likes of Marti Noxon, Jane Epensen, Douglas Petrie and creator Joss Whedon (you may have heard of him.) Naturally, they are quick-witted and were quite non-compliant to the studio execs desire to make Buffy, well…less like Buffy. This is also the people that penned the Emmy-nominated, almost entirely silent “Hush,” as a reaction to being told the show was nothing without it’s dialogue. That is ballsy.

Whedon briefly touches upon how newer female fans are making him feel old – which I get, I’ve had a decade-long love affair with Buffy and I feel ancient – but it’s all in good fun. Joss has always been a big supporter of women, and one of Buffy’s overarching themes was about female empowerment. Please excuse me for a second while I retreat to Netflix and cry while watching Buffy’s speech in the last episode, because every video of that on Youtube is overdubbed with Nickelback.

I’m still keeping my fingers crossed for another ‘Buffy’ cast reunion. Aside from the Alyson Hannigan and David Boreanaz you rarely see the cast around anymore, and I’m dying to know where everyone ended up.

Except for Riley. Riley can stay at home.
