Boobquake!

by Jamie Doak

Have y’all heard of Boobquake?  It was a joke facebook event started by Jennifer McCreight in response to Iranian Prayer Leader Hojatoleslam Kazem Sedighi’s quote that, “Many women who do not dress modestly … lead young men astray, corrupt their chastity and spread adultery in society, which (consequently) increases earthquakes.”  Makes sense……

Boobquake is a science experiment encouraging  women to dress ‘immodestly’ on the same day (April 26) in hopes of creating a massive earthquake or, you know, proving lady skin DOESN’T actually effect plate techtonics.  (Because you know Sedighi knows and cares about what kids are up to on Facebook….)

The event has caused a lot of controversy as women post pictures of their goodies on the event wall which draw all the creepers out from their creeper holes to oogle them.  Other critics say the event is counter-productive or just ineffectual.  McCright maintains it’s just a joke and that “really, it’s not supposed to be serious activism that is going to revolutionize women’s rights, but just a bit of fun juvenile humor. I’m a firm believer that when someone says something so stupid and hateful, serious discourse isn’t going to accomplish anything – sometimes light-hearted mockery is worthwhile.”  I’m with her there.

But I don’t think a lot of people are going to get the joke.  Most people are just going to see a girl showing some clevage and go, “hot,” not “LOLZ That’s such a great social commentary.”  But if it makes the women who participate satisfied because they’re giving a big “fuck you” to Sedighi, then cool.  I’m all for that.  I really don’t have any strong opinions either way on the event.  Does anyone else?  Did anyone participate?
