Baby Daddy

by Debbie Stoller

There’s been a lot of talk lately about Thomas Beatie, the FTM transexual who is currently pregnant, especially since he appeared on Oprah yesterday. He’s being touted as the "first pregnant man."

However, there was another male pregnancy that followed this exact same set of circumstances almost a decade ago.

Matt Rice, the FTM partner of Pat Califia, gave birth to their son back in the late 1990’s.

Just like Thomas, Matt had had top surgery and was taking testosterone for a while, then had to quit taking testosterone because he was experiencing terrible migraine headaches from it (and, like Thomas, somehow managed to maintain his facial hair). He eventually became pregnant from artificial insemination, and had a  baby boy.

This is proof that people who have taken testosterone and then quit can still give birth to healthy babies, and that’s a relief. The only difference between the two cases is that Thomas’ baby is a girl, so it remains to be seen whether the hormones Thomas used to take will have any affect on her development.

You can read more about this "first pregnant man" in an 2000 article written by Pat Califia here.
