These days, celebrity sex tapes pop up all over with a surprising amount of ease. Topless (and bottomless, as was the case with a certain N.Y.C. mayoral candidate) photos can be found leaked all over Twitter, sending the Internet into a frenzy. Videos can cause even more of a stir. Some people have even turned the release of their more, er, intimate moments into an empire. I’m looking at you, Kim Kardashian.
But a sex tape that gives the viewer important information about an international crisis? That’s something downright novel.
Alyssa Milano, of Who’s The Boss?, Charmed, and Melrose Place fame, “leaked” a very different kind of sex tape Wednesday, produced by Will Ferrell and Adam McKay’s humor website Funny or Die.
The tape shows Milano, and an attractive man stumbling into a hotel room, getting a little frisky, and then…well, we can all imagine, but we don’t quite get to see, as the camera gets kicked toward the television, which is tuned to a news anchor reporting statistics about the crisis in Syria. All we see of Milano’s escapade are rustling sheets and moving limbs reflected in a mirror on the wall. But the information we get about Syria is very real indeed.
“I think it was a really fun way to get people to realize that there are important issues our country is dealing with right now,” Milano told Mother Jones. “If people end up learning something about the crisis in Syria that’s a good thing—even if I had to do a sex tape to lure them in.”
Time and time again it has been proven that sex sells. Milano is using her sexuality as an endorsement, not for a product, but to start a discussion about current events.
Not only has this video stirred up a lot of discussion regarding Syria and the possibility of an impending war, but it also shows that the exploitation of women’s sexuality in advertising is still a very real issue. Milano’s wording, “even if I had to do a sex tape,” has a hint of resignation to them, as if she felt this was the only way she could get these issues into the public eye. It’s easy to believe that many aren’t truly informed about the crisis in Syria, but it’s too bad that Milano believes it takes a fake sex tape to get people’s attention about the very real goings on in the world.
