5 Reasons Why House of Cards Is Feminist Friendly

by Gina Furfaro

In case you haven’t hopped on the House of Cards bandwagon yet, here are five reasons why this political drama will tickle your feminist fancy:

1)  It passes the Bechdel test.

Yes, there are scenes with two female characters with names that talk to each other about something other than men. Woo!

2) Robin Wright is a bad-ass in this show.

Her role as Mrs. Claire Underwood is bold, sexy and sometimes pretty darn scary. Also, she unapologetically admits to having an abortion on live TV.

3) Apparently, President Obama watches it.

Knowing Obama has watched the show obviously makes it more amusing.

4) Molly Parker plays a gender role breakin’ -war veteran-Congresswoman.

Her tough, charming character definitely holds your attention.

5) SPOILER ALERT: The main characters have a 3-some.

Mr. Francis Underwood, played by Kevin Spacey, is a ruthless and incredibly masculine individual that happens to be bi-sexual.  Even though Frances Underwood is attracted to men (and has an array of sexual encounters in the series), he is not any less respected by the audience.

Though it’s not perfect, House of Cards challenges societal norms and keeps you at the edge of your seat the entire time. The best part is, you can catch the whole series on Netflix
