Sure, we’re feeling all proud about ourselves here in the US for electing our first African-American president, and rightly so. But over in Iceland, they’ve just got their first openly gay Prime Minister, and that makes her also the first openly gay head of state in the whole entire world, ever! Johanna Sigurdardottir is Iceland’s first lipstick lesbian leader, as well as Iceland’s first female Prime Minister (although they previously had a female President. Can someone please explain the difference to me? ) Once an airline stewardess who helped unionize the stewardesses (check out BUST’s Oct/Nov 2007 issue for more on the importance of unionization among stewardesses), she was also married to a dude at one point and has two kids, but 6 years ago, at the age of 60, she married Jonina Leosdottir, and they have been together ever since. Oh, yeah – gay marriage has been legal in Iceland since 1996. Oh Iceland! First the elves who live in rocks, then Bjork, and now this? Even though your entire economy collapsed, I still think you’re the awesomest!
