So exciting! Cody Tubman is her high school’s first ever transgender prom queen, crowned by classmates in Middleborough, Massachusetts. Does anyone else wish they went to Middleborough High?
Cody came out as transgender in her freshman year, and she stopped wearing boys’ clothes the year after that. Her mama was loving and supportive from the start, her school was down with her using the girls’ washrooms, and Cody says most of her classmates really accepted her for being herself.
We should expect (okay, demand) this kind of behaviour from every community! But crowning Cody prom queen is some next-level acceptance.
“It was surprising and it was exciting,” Cody said. “I was like, we’re coming really far.”
Cody isn’t the first trans* prom queen to make the news – Andii in Florida, Connor in Ontario, and Tony in Texas have all made big prom night strides for trans* inclusion in their communities over the past few years.

And in other trans* beauty queen news, who could forget last year’s legal battle that won Jenna Talackova, trans woman and blonde goddess, the right to compete in Miss Universe pageants? It made The Donald (ugh) himself recognize that transgender women are more than beautiful enough to run for his company’s crown.
The world needs more communities like Middleborough High and role models like Cody’s mom and the girl herself to keep this momentum coming. Thankfully she’s up for the task. In Cody’s words:
“People need a leader and someone to look up to and someone to help them through the process themselves so, I think I could do that.”
Next up for Middleborough’s queen? Cody kisses high school goodbye and moves to Manhattan to study visual and performing arts at Eugene Lang College. Congrats, girl! Be sure to find us BUSTies when you get here!
