This Photo Series Puts Powerful Messages On Women’s Naked Bodies

Lately, our great nation has had some up and downs with feminism. We’ve seen blows to abortion rights, birth control access and equal pay, and the recoil of protections against domestic violence. In 2012, Liora K decided to do something about it. She reached for her camera. She wanted something that could be shared quickly, something that was easy to understand.

Liora’s work stems from a belief in intersectional feminism, and seeks to highlight women from a variety of backgrounds, races, and sizes. “Women are varied and diverse. To only show one type or mostly one type of woman would be completely disingenuous and exclusionary,” she told BUST.

The photographs have gone viral, and have allowed a wide variety of feminist sentiments to be displayed in a visual way. Liora K recalled an instance where someone shared a picture from a protest abroad using one of her photographs as signage.

“It’s a real honor as an artist to see that someone feels that your work represents their emotions so strongly that they’ll share it in any capacity, and especially to elevate their own voice at something like a protest,” she said.

Liora has been working on the series for several years and continues to find the project an inspirational challenge.

“[It has been] an incredible vehicle to understanding parts of feminism that I hadn’t previously been conscious of. As a result, I am so much more aware of what I am being taught by media and privilege, and how to try to circumvent that conditioning to achieve greater equality,” she writes on her website.
