It’s a sad truth that most people don’t like what they see when they look in the mirror, and we all know that a lot of those feelings can be attributed to the fact that we live in a global culture of impossible “beauty” standards and body-shaming.
But the good news is Taryn Brumfitt—writer, speaker, mother of three, and founder of Body Image Movement—is creating a new documentary aiming to change women’s body perception all over the world. Brumfitt, who lives in Adelaide, Australia, was inspired after posting nontraditional “before and after” photos on Facebook that ended up going viral. The world was shocked that a woman could love and be proud of her body, especially after putting on weight rather than taking it off:
On May 10th, 2014 she launched the Kickstarter for her documentary Embrace. Brumfitt—using her own story as well as other women’s descriptions of their bodies—disproves the idea that we are alone in feeling “stumpy,” “imperfect,” and “disgusting.”
“How am I going to teach my beautiful daughter, how am I going to teach her to love her body, if her Mum can’t do the same?” This is the question that guides Brumfitt as she helps convince the world that as women, we can feel beautiful, embrace our bodies, and teach our children to do the same.
Embrace already has us holding back tears, and we can’t wait to see the full documentary—tissues in hand.
