The New Dude on Girls

by Intern Christina

Have you guys seen HBO’s new show Girls? If not, you should definitely check it out. It’s honest, hilarious, and all about us- that is, if you’re a twenty something female or a slightly misguided post-grad. It’s the TV show brainchild of Judd Apatow and Lena Dunham, known best for her film Tiny Furniture. But Girls has been criticized for not representing all of us, an apt critique of a show with a so far only white cast.

Perhaps Dunham is trying to remedy that with her newest addition to the show’s second season: Donald Glover. The African American actor who plays Troy on NBC’s Community and moonlights as a rapper under the moniker Childish Gambino will be featured in a role on the upcoming second season of Girls, but Dunham has not yet made it clear what kind of role it will be. She posted a cryptic photo of Donald on the set, and then the press posted an equally ambiguous photo of the two on a set of steps together. Afterwards, she confirmed he will have a role in Girls.

Dunham did, however, make it clear that she wants to avoid all tokenism in casting, so hopefully Glover will not be appearing on the show solely to fill a racial void. We have a feeling his comedy will add to the already incredibly smart sarcasm that is Girls.
