Help Get Women Elected At PERSISTICON II: The ROCKENING

by Tessa Solomon

Like partying? How about getting progressive, pro-choice women elected to government? Yeah, us too.

So, stop by the Bell House in Brooklyn on October 21st for PERSISTICON II: The ROCKENING. It’s a variety show benefiting EMILY’S List, a political organization dedicated to getting democratic women into government positions. Last year’s PERSISTICON was a wild success—over $16,000 was raised for the organization. To surpass that amount this year, they’ve packed the program with fabulous performers. Among those joining PERSITICON: Janeane Garofalo, Murray Hill, Jo Firestone, Negin Farsad, Theo Kogan of the Lunachicks, Emily Cain, Ashley Nicole Black, and Evelyn McDonnell.

Also joining the revelry are special guests Emily Cain, Executive Director of EMILY’s List (no, she’s not the EMILY—but a very powerful political force nonetheless) and State Assembly candidate and DREAMer Catalina Cruz.

It’s fundraising (that’s actually fun), with an urgent cause. Midterm elections are less than a month away. More women than ever are running for government positions. According to The New York Times, 476 women ran in Democratic or Republican primaries for Congress across the country. So far, 221 have lost House or a Senate races, but there are another 83 whose races are still pending.

EMILY’s List is here to see those races won by women who will fight for increasingly fraught issues: reproductive rights and gender equality. For 30 years, they’ve helped elect 100 pro-choice Democratic women to the House, 23 to the Senate, 12 to governors’ seats, and hundreds to state and local offices. In Washington, few organizations rival EMILY’s List in funding for minority candidates.

PERSISTICON aims to be more than a political fundraiser, though. The benefit hopes to build community among feminists. will be showcasing women artists, and celebrating the release of Women Who Rock: From Bessie to Beyonce, Girl Groups to Riot Grrrl by Evelyn McDonnell. Bring your friends, bring your frenemies—all are welcome at the ROCKENING.
