Tell us about yourself!

My name is Julie and I own Julie Ann Art, a Los Angeles-based paper goods line. My designs are all hand-drawn, starting with a simple pen and paper. It is my goal to provide consumers with unique, relatable greeting cards that says exactly what they’re thinking! What started as just a hobby has turned into a nationally recognized brand sold in various brick and mortar stores across the US, including Urban Outfitters. When I’m not caught up in the online business world I like to bike ride to the beach with my husband and our little terrier.

How did you get started?

I had heard about Etsy through a friend and created a shop on a whim. I had always been creative growing up (winning “Most Artistic” in 8th grade!) and thought, why not try to make something and sell it? There was no immediate, big dream of one day owning my own business and living the self-employed life. That came later.

What’s inspiring you right now?

I get most of my inspiration from daily life, real relationships, and human experiences. There’s a lot of “fluff” in the world and I think my product’s realistic approach to life is what makes it desirable. My best ideas come from actual conversations I have had with my friends and family.

Any advice for those starting out in the handmade industry?

The handmade industry is blowing up, and it can be hard to get found in a sea of equally amazing fish. Strive to be original and unique because that is what is going to set you apart from the rest. Also, the interweb is your friend! If you need help, do your research. You can find the answers to all your questions if you put in the time and commit to it.

What are you most looking forward to at the BUST Craftacular in Los Angeles?

I’m looking forward to meeting new people! It’s such a special thing to be able to share my designs with customers face-to-face. I love having an online shop but there is nothing that beats the in-person shopping experience.
