Now At Observatory: Death, Bugs and Rock and Roll

by Phoebe Magee

Act now!  TOMORROW, March 4th, at 8 PM, journalist, writer and soon to be novelist Alix Strauss will present an illustrated lecture entitled “Death Becomes Them: Unearthing the Suicides of the Brilliant, the Famous, and the Notorious”  at supercool Brooklyn exhibition space Observatory.  Strauss is the author of a recently published book of the same name, and her presentation is based on her research into the last days of such “icons of celebrity suicide” as Virginia Woolf, Diane Arbus, Kurt Cobain and Sigmund Freud, and the impact their deaths had on the world at large.  Strauss is interested in the social history of suicide, and what she considers to be “the seductive appeal of celebrity suicide in Western culture.”  Her lecture will include readings from her book, as well as her own case-by-case analysis of what happened to some of suicide’s most brilliant, famous, or otherwise notorious victims–and what happens to our society in the wake of their losses.

Come for the Lecture, Stay for the Bugs:

As if that weren’t enough, Observatory is also hosting “a group show of insect art” collectively entitled Entomologia.  Now until April 4th, you can see all manner of visual art not only “inspired by insects,” but also, in some cases, “incorporating” them.  The exhibit was curated by Michelle Enemark, of the travel site curiousexpeditions.org, and includes the work of a number of talented female artists.  Learn more about it and see all participating artists here.

Observatory is located at No. 543 Union Street, in the Gowanus district of Brooklyn, New York.  Gallery Hours for Entomologia are 3-6 Thursday and Friday, and 12-6 Saturday and Sunday.  Alix Strauss will present “Death Becomes Them…” at Observatory at 8 P.M. tomorrow night, Thursday, March 4th, and tickets are a very doable 5 bucks.
