The July/August issue of Annals of Family Medicine provided a not-so-shocking discovery that women over the age of 60 are still having sex (and enjoying it).
As a sexually active woman in my 20’s, I want to declare that I will never not (yes, that was a double negative) want to have sex and promise my opinion will be the same in 30 years time. Nobody should assume any woman becomes inactive after menopause, either, but that’s an entirely different subject on gender stigma we can save for later.
According to the study, women aged 60 to 70 were finding the same sexual satisfaction of women aged 30 to 40. To draw conclusions, over 2,100 women were surveyed – ranging from 28 to 84 – with 62 percent sexually active in the past six months.
Also not surprising is the information of women maintaining sexual satisfaction. According to Dr. Holly Thomas, who conducted the interview, “…we assume that sex goes downhill as we get older…”
The study wasn’t entirely useless, though. Apparently, women with a partner were eight times more likely to be sexually active and satisfied than those without; it’s probably easiest to achieve what we want when we have sex with somebody we trust. Still yet, 13% of women without a partner and over 60 were sexually active.
The takeaway? Everybody has sex, even old people.
