New Status Symbol: Stay At Home Wives????

by Emily Rems

I’m all shook up over this article on CNN.com proclaiming "Stay-At-Home-Wives" (as in, married women with no kids who just, like, you know, stay at home) the new must-have domestic accessories. Here’s a choice little nugget:

"Daniel Buccino, a Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine clinical social worker and psychotherapist, says stay-at-home wives are the latest ‘status symbols.’"

"’It says, ‘We make enough money that we both don’t need to work outside the home,’" he says. "And especially with the recent economic pressures, a stay-at-home spouse is often an extreme and visible luxury."

I belive Kyle’s mom on South Park said it best when she proclaimed "Wha-wha-whaaaaattttt????"

Are you fucking kidding me? Look – I’m all for people giving tasks traditionally considered "womens work" the respect they deserve. And I’m glad that in what this article laughably refers to as our "post-feminist world," domestic work is apparently valued. But not surprisingly, nowhere in this flimsy trend piece is there even the vaguest suggestion that a working woman with a stay-at-home, status symbol husband could be envied or socially accepted in any way. Am I over-reacting, or is this a harbinger of the goddamn apocalypse? What next? "Non-voting wives latest must-have accessory?"
