Going to see a band that you like, but don’t know all that much about, can be a complex experience filled with intrigue and a roller coaster of emotions. Basically it’s like this … I accidentally made fun of one of the girls from Mountain Man right behind her head, not knowing she was in the band.
The other night my friend and I made our way to Knitting Factory in Brooklyn to see Mountain Man open for Junip. The band is an all girl, folky three-piece from Vermont and is comprised of Molly Erin Sarle, Alexandra Sauser-Monnig, and Amelia Randall Meath. We got to the venue early and were watching the opening band, Twi The Humble Feather, end their set, when all of a sudden this short, wild-eyed girl lept out of nowhere and started making “YEEYEEYEEYEE” noises. My friend and I exchanged eye rolls and matching sentiments that were along the lines of, “who’s this nut?” And then minutes later that very nut was up on stage. And now let me lay down the proverbial carpet of sugar by saying that all three of the girls from Mountain Man sound like they were harvested from a honey comb and brought to life by harnessing the electricity of fireflies. It will never cease to amaze me how certain singers can be so talented that when they sing, it sounds as though the room is filled with instruments. Standing at the front of the stage, I locked eyes with each of the girls as they sang – bouncing from one to the other, and was intimidated by their harmonizing and guitar plucking. Something about their entire set made me want to sit on a wooden rocker in the country, maybe on a big porch at dusk, and just twiddle my toes in the fresh air. After they left the stage, my friend and I made our way to the Subway and tried our hands at a few of their songs. Yeah, we couldn’t quite do it …
