Is This Employer Rating Site The Bechdel Test Of Workplace Female Friendliness?

by Holly Trantham

It’s no secret that we’re not yet in a place where we have across-the-board workplace equality. It’s too a nuanced issue to solve quickly, especially without resources to heavily micromanage specific employers. One ratings site, however, is attempting to change the game, and we must say we’re pretty intrigued. InHerSight is dedicated to providing women with testimonial-based ratings of companies in terms of how well they treat women. Think Glassdoor, but entirely female-focused.

The ratings are calculated on a typical 5 star system. Three overarching categories—Personal, Career, and Family—are divided into several subcategories, including wellness initiatives, maternity and adoptive lead, management opportunities for women, and salary satisfaction. Each company’s scorecard contains ratings for every individual category as well as one overall grade.

The site holds the belief that transparency will lead to better workplace equality: “We’re on a mission to measure how well employers support the women who work for them—and to turn those insights into better support for women in the workplace.” We love this, of course, and we’d love to see similar sites with ratings geared towards supporting LGBTQ people and people of color.

One obvious catch, of course, is that in order to benefit from the results, lots of women need to contribute their own ratings. It’s not a time-consuming process, but the site can’t succeed without a lot of data to showcase. As long as site traffic keeps growing, this could definitely be an integral part of every woman’s job search process.
