Last month when Julieta Morales and I launched our website Sentïre, we created an Instagram to help share our posts and photography. Everything was running smoothly through the social media tubing. Then suddenly, our linkage was cut off like a trust fund baby after a crazy night in Tijuana.
You’re probably asking yourself why Instagram would do such a thing to two nice, young ladies trying to share their work with the world. What did we possibly do to receive a report of having an uncensored image too raunchy for the eyes of social media? What could cause for sudden removal of every post from our favorite form of social media? Well, here it is! Above is a photo of a young caucasian male drinking a beer in one hand and holding pickles in the other, but doing all of it while shirtless in his kitchen. I dare to say it again, SHIRT-LESS.
Last I checked, there’s an ongoing web frenzy on “freeing the nipple”. Many protest that it is sexist towards women, and Instagram still flags and deletes them while men get to parade their holy rollers wherever they please. Now, I’m not asking for classless images of breasts but there are artistic imagery that has gotten banned because a painting of a male’s flaccid penis is less threatening than a women’s areola.
Instagram has stated they don’t have an issue with artistic freedom but that Apple, which houses their application, forbids it as apart of their guidelines. So why is there such an issue with a male’s nipple on a a little website’s post? Let’s say someone out there in the online world reported us, isn’t it Instagram’s job to check the flagged post? Aren’t they supposed to see if the image is going against the rules of services before deleting everything someone’s built? I mean why not take down the one image instead of going Braveheart on the entire account? I guess what bothers us the most is the fact that there is no real way to contact anyone behind Instragram without being sent to read FAQ’s and bullshit about how once its deleted, it’s pretty much a lost cause.
I’ve chosen the Instagram game over Twitter but I don’t get the haste or the instant removal. Billionaire, Dan Bilzerian takes photos of women shooting AK-47’s in bikinis and doesn’t seem to be getting flagged for their augmentations and the use of his iPhone’s Slo-Mo capabilities. At the end of the day, all I know for sure is that Instragram and I have some trust issues we may need to work through. #wheresthelove #freethecoednipples
