Indian Women Fight the Hindu Taliban With Pink Panties ‘n Pints!

by Debbie Stoller

Remember the story we reported a few weeks back, about how men from an extremist conservative group called Sri Ram Sena had attacked a number of young Indian women who had been committing the horrible crime of having a pint at a pub? (Visit our earlier post to see the truly upsetting video of the attack ).

Well, our Indian sisters weren’t about to sit around feeling sari for themselves! The day after our post, they organized  a giant, nationwide protest, called the Pink Chaddi Campaign,, Launched by a group who call themselves ‘The Consortium of Loose, Pub-Going Forward Women’ (our kind of gals!), the campaign encouraged women all across India and across the world to march into the nearest pub on Valentine’s day and raise a toast to Indian women, and take a picture of themselves doing so. The photo would them be sent onto the Sri Ram Sena. They also called for women to send a pair of pink chaddis (underwear) to the group’s leader. And they started a Facebook group which has 44,000 members and counting.

Their action received media attention all over the world, from the Times of India to the New York Times, and they are planning to continue their protest even after Valentine’s day. Become a fan of their Facebook group and Blog for more info. Of course, their ultimate goal is not to smother the Sri Ram Sena to death with underwear, but to bet some more of the leaders in their country to oppose the group, and perhaps even make them illegal.
