The Fire Department of New York’s annual calendar is known for its manly babes flexing their six-packs, which could only come from the hours of work they do saving the lives of New Yorkers while risking their own.
While admiring the eye candy has been great, no women have ever been featured in the magazine. Danae Mines wanted to change that; from her 11 years of experience as a New York fire fighter, she stated that she “wanted [her] picture in the calendar so that young girls and young women can see [her] and know that they can do this job.”
At first, her request was basically met with a “IF it happens, you’ll be in pin-up girl mode” response – which Mines was having exactly none of. “I wasn’t going to let anyone tell me I couldn’t do what I wanted to do,” Mines said in an interview with the New York Daily News.
So now when you open up to March 2015 in the FDNY calendar, you see the first female fire fighter (who is also a woman of color!!) to grace these pages. Mines is standing tall and proud – a total role model and FDNY babe in her own right by doing what she wants.
ALSO- she noted that she’s pumped to rep March because, FYI, that’s Women’s History Month.
