Feminism

It is 2010 and I read an article the other day in the New York Times about how women are still dealing with the disparity in wages, a battle the women at Ford's Dagenham assembly plant fought, and supposedly won, in 1968. Their struggles, and their victories, are honored in Nigel Cole's new film, "Made in Dagenham", a British comedy coming to us this fall. The film recounts the true story of the 187 sewing machinists who protested being classed as "unskilled laborers" on account...
I had the pleasure of watching singer/writer/comedian Mindy Raf perform as her alter ego, Leibya Rogers, on Saturday night at Arlene's Grocery in New York City. The act consisted of vegan feminist multi-talented live performer, Leibya, using songs, sounds, and some interpretive dancing to tell us about herself and her beliefs. Among my favorites was a love song to Katie Holmes, with lyrics like, "I'll let you scream real loud when you're in labor", a hip hop song titled "My Vag is Better than Your...

Mehran is a six-year-old Afghani girl who is being raised by her parents as a boy. This phenomenon is called bacha posh, and translates to “girl in boy’s clothes”. In Afghanistan boys are valued higher than girls; they are able to carry their father’s name and be privy to his inheritance. Women are alienated from any kind of social standing and not really even allowed to be seen let alone walk freely. Bacha posh looks to remedy this, at least for a time...

I like to compare reality television to cheese puffs. I can always rely on them to supplying me with no nutritional value and a consistent source of instant cheesy gratification. When the giant size tinsel lined economy pack bag is dwindling down to near emptiness, I know that in a mere few hours I will be regretting my lustful snacking perseverance, and proceed to feel awful at grazing myself into a new all time low. With that being said, it's no surprise that the E! network...
Reporter Ines Sainz was scheduled to interview Mark Sanchez of the NY Jets, when she got a little more attention than she bargained for. Ines, a reporter for Azteca TV (a Mexican station) and a former Miss Spain pageant queen, was the alleged victim of sexual harassment. She was "cat-called" as well as whistled and stared out while at Jets Florham Park. Ines has been criticized for being dressed inappropriately, although she was wearing jeans and a tee shirt. I don't think Mrs. Sainz style of dress...

Personally, when I think of Girl Scouts, I think of cookies. I also think of an organization that encourages young women to explore new activities and cultures, widening the scope of their education. However, Hans Zeiger, a Republican candidate for Washington’s House of Representatives wouldn’t agree with that assertion. He alleges (in a personal blog that he attempted to delete, but was still cached, thanks to Google) that (and I am not making this up): “the Girl Scouts allow homosexuals and atheists to join their...

A disturbing New York Times article published this week brings to light a very scary reminder that the plight of feminism isn't over yet: poison gas attacks targeting all-girls schools in Afghanistan. According to an Afghan official, said attacks have been going on for two years, with two attacks occurring in the past week.   According to the article "The spokesman, Dr. Kargar Norughli, said his ministry and the World Health Organization had been testing the blood of victims in 10 mass sickenings and had confirmed the presence of...

Ima gotta admit–I think the world was a better place before this series of books and movies came out. OK, maybe I should limit it to the movies since I haven't read the books, and obviously that means just the first two since the hornet one is yet to arrive on our shores, but I can't imagine how augmenting my knowledge of this trilogy would change my mind. I was going to hold off on passing judgment until the third one came out, but with...

Oh, Canada! We love that the ad world  is finally realizing that, yup, women have a sense of humor too. And with the Old Spice ads they surely have a winner. This Canadian Stayfree ad, which I'm sure it's creators hope will be a major viral video, is a virus, alright, but more like an STD. Aside from the fact that a dude is lecturing me on what kind of maxi pad to use, what kind of hot date busts out with...

The Republicans made a good choice with Sarah Palin. That’s the point Anna Holmes (editor of Jezebel.com) and Rebecca Traister (author of the forthcoming Big Girls Don’t Cry: The Election That Changed Everything for American Women) consider in their op-ed in the New York Times this past Sunday. And it’s an interesting one to consider: what ladies do the Democrats have? For the group that is supposed to be more liberal and open, their main player was Hillary Clinton, but now she’s gone from the...
