She was possibly the most badass woman in the history of World War II. One of the most decorated WWII servicewomen, Nancy Wake led 7,000 maquisards - armed resistance fighters -  in battles against the Nazis. She rode a bicycle for more than 500 miles through several German checkpoints to replace codes her wireless operator had been forced to destroy in a raid. She even killed an SS sentry with her bare hands - a fatal karate chop - to prevent him from raising an...
Big changes for women are happening in the Middle East right now! Tunisia, who has been a leader for women's rights in that region, have a new electoral system in the works. This means that in the months to come, the women of Tunisia may just get a chance to vote and run as candidates along side the men. In April, the electoral commission established to make rules for the upcoming October assembly elections. Political parties are to alternate men and women on their lists...
The last word I would use to describe spoken word artist Pandora Scooter is ‘shy’. From her colorful coif to her energetic arm gestures, it’s hard not to listen to what she has to say. There is very little that Pandora won’t talk about. A regular stage banter may revolve around anything from sex in an airplane lavatory to ‘labia-licking’ ladies. An advocate for every single color of the sexuality spectrum, Pandora strives to send the crucial message - especially to the youth - that...
The phrase “Let’s not get caught” has never held so much weight as it does in the final scene of Thelma & Louise. No matter how many times I’ve seen it (a lot), I still get chills. Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis are just SO DANG good, and talk about a feminist classic. The film turns 20 (!!) this year which means New Yorkers and Los Angelenos have a chance to not only see it on the big screen at special showings, but also to...
Today is a victorious day for the supporters of Planned Parenthood. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has put into effect the new guidelines requiring health insurance plans beginning on or after August 1, 2012 to cover birth control, among other preventive services. The list of services that will now be covered includes free screenings for conditions such as gestational diabetes and the human papillomavirus (HPV), support for breastfeeding equipment, domestic violence screening, and counseling on sexually transmitted diseases. Think you have out-of-this-world sewing skills? Well, no offense, but they probably are no match for the skills of the ladies who created the Apollo space suits. (Unless your hobby is to meticulously craft suits capable of withstanding space travel and landing on the moon. If so, I commend you.) The space suit was stitched together from 21 layers of different materials as varied as Teflon and Lycra, and each layer served a specific purpose. Here's the big surprise - before sewing for NASA, these...
Boys and girls perform equally in math and science testing when they begin elementary school, and show about the same level of enjoyment of the subjects. However, by 8th grade twice as many boys than girls are interested in STEM careers, (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) which are ultimately the fields with the highest growth rate and earning potential. This contributes to the gender pay gap among adults as well as various other inequalities. In high school teenage girls are less likely to take AP...
Despite a break from the heat wave, my Monday evening was still super hot and steamy thanks to Planned Parenthood of NYC’s 7th annual benefit, Summer, Sex & Spirits, of which BUST was a proud sponsor. The event, hosted by PPNYC Activist Council, raised over $20,000 for the organization’s healthcare services, educational programs, and legislative work. Guests enjoyed the all night open bar with refreshing beer provided by Brooklyn Brewery: The fabulous silent auction featured oodles of goodies like this beautiful necklace donated by Wendy Mink Jewelry: Happy party-goers...

The evolution of Comic-Con has seen many changes over the years. While the inclusion of Hollywood creates excitement, on the flip side, the "nerd market" has become so hot, the convention floor is littered with booth-babe Slave Leia's trying to tempt nerds to the dark side. In a crowd of 300,000 I saw only one original Leia (not decked out in a sexy slave outfit) far off in the distance when riding the shuttle back to my hotel. I nearly made the bus driver pull...
