Last night we attended a launch party for Rookie Yearbook One--edited by current BUST cover girl Tavi Gevinson!--at McNally Jackson Books in New York City. The room was packed with amazing girls, good vibes, lots of love, candy, and endless outfit inspirations. Many of the Rookie regulars were there to read excerpts from the book, which is a compilation of the first year's posts from rookiemag.com. The quality of the writing on Rookie is impressive, and we loved seeing the writers (both girls and guys) read their...
During the Democratic National Convention, double-named CNN contributor Erick Erickson tweeted, "First night of the Vagina Monologues in Charlotte going as expected." Apparently this guy doesn’t know the difference between Eve Ensler's blockbuster play and a convention full of well-spoken female politicians. (Here's a hint: the former involves a lot more mentions of clitoris and labia). To give you more evidence of this guy’s distaste for women in politics--and probably women who speak, in general--Erickson defended Rush Limbaugh after his...
You’ve been hearing plenty about Hurricane Isaac this summer, but did you ever wonder why Isaac is called Isaac, and not Isa or Ingrid?   Until 1979, hurricanes were always named after women. The system started during WWII, when U.S. Air Force and Navy meteorologists needed a way to identify hurricanes while analyzing weather maps. Many of those meteorologists – male, of course - began naming the hurricanes after their wives and girlfriends in a twisted sort of tribute. Interesting idea, but who would...

Just when you thought Martha Plimpton couldn't get any cooler, she up and does just that. Last night she announced on Twitter that she had  released a video for the  women's rights group she recently launched, A is For. In it, she explains the why she started the org--which is basically that things kinda suck for women here and around the world, and they are getting sucker. Plimpton wants to help make things better, and her Org has an interesting rallying cry. Anyone who has ever...
A recent Buzzfeed list of famous women who don’t identify as feminists should instead have been called “proof that nobody understands what feminism is.” Most of the women on the list seemed to be responding to the question “are you a rabid man-hater?” not “are you a feminist?” and/or not understand that those are two very different questions. “I don’t think that I would consider myself a feminist,” Marissa Mayer said. “I think that I certainly believe in equal rights, I believe that women are just as...

Some of you Internet users may be familiar with the ‘Idiot Nerd Girl’ meme. For those who are not, it's a meme depicting a young girl with thick plastic-framed glasses, on top of images emblazoned with a joke about what a poseur she is and how she doesn’t understand nerd culture. Examples include‘42 lolololol. Douglas Adams? Who is that? and ‘Monty Python is the funniest guy ever.' These jokes are weak because they perpetuate the already annoying stereotype that women can’t hack it in nerd...
There was a breach in security at the Republican National Convention in Tampa last Wednesday, but the gatecrashers in question weren't there to get violent. The perpetrators were 21-year-old Laura Mills, a recent college graduate from Illinois' Knox College, and retired colonel Ann Wright. The two feminists are members of the women’s anti-war group, CodePink, and caused a scene to interrupt the speech of Vice President candidate, Paul Ryan.   The CodePink members waited until Ryan was eight minutes into his speech to strike.  When he mentioned...
Dear Style.com editors, I recently had the pleasure of reading your pre-Fashion Week slideshow. Wedged between "Is There Life After J. Crew?" and "Are You Sick of Prints Yet?", I came across a story titled "Is Lesbian Chic Here to Stay?". It was a definite eye-opener. Here I was, so focused on trivial matters like securing the freedom to marry, that I failed to realize that I am currently a fashion trend. Previously, I was under the impression that I became aware of my sexuality at the...
Feminist icon Germaine Greer has come under fire recently for making negative remarks about other women.  Greer wrote the 1970 bestseller, The Female Eunuch, which encouraged women to reject the traditional nuclear family idea (she felt it oppressed women.) In March, the Australian feminist said Prime Minister Julia Gillard had a "big arse."  She also noted that Gillard's jackets make her look like an "organ grinder's monkey," though she later backtracked a bit and said, "a woman is not her jacket."  Ya don't say! Courier Mail writer...
Remember when Todd Akin, the Republican representative currently vying for a seat on the Missouri Senate, made his now-infamous rape gaffe earlier this month? Well, it looks like angry white men across the country just can't stop committing political suicide by drowning in Akin’s word vomit. From “legitimate rape” to “forcible rape” and everything in between, here are five of the worst rape-related comments lawmakers made this month. Oh, P.S. Not one of them has a uterus.     1. Missouri Rep. Todd Akin: "First of all, from...
