Glee character, Lauren Zizes is my new idol. She has a don’t-give-a-fuck attitude reminiscent of Daria, and exudes self-esteem and confidence.
Zizes, played by Ashley Fink, started out as a background character in season one. She gained more air-time when she agreed to join glee club in the latest season, so they can qualify for sectionals, even though she thinks “show choir is lame”. She still remained in the background, up until recently when Puck, the most popular guy in school, develops a crush on her. For Valentines Day, much to everyone’s dismay, he serenades her with “Fat-Bottomed Girls” by Queen, only to be told by Zizes that it was offensive. She rejects his advances, even standing him up after agreeing to a date, while any other girl in the school would be falling at his feet to get a chance with him. Puck claims to love her curvy body, but when Zizes is unimpressed and says, “I look like what America looks like”, he admits that he doesn’t just dig her bigger frame. He likes her because she’s more of a badass then he is, which is believable. She’s on the school’s wrestling team, doesn’t seem to care about what anyone thinks, and is totally confident and comfortable with herself.
At one point, the character Santana, jealous of Zizes, challenges her to a physical fight, which Santana promptly loses. The irony of a cheerleader with breast implants being jealous of Zizes is priceless.
We finally get to hear Zizes sing in the last episode, where she wows the glee club with her debut performance. Her rendition of “I Know What Boys Like” by The Waitresses is one of the sexiest performances I’ve seen on Glee, and you can almost see all the glee boys blushing.
If you’re not convinced at how awesome Zizes is, I’ll let her own words persuade you. In a conversation with Puck, she says, “I’m not desperate so if you really want this you best come correct ’cause I spell woman Z-I-Z-E-S. And I need to be wooed. You understand me? Wooed.”
