The Netherlands is pretty high on the list of countries getting it right. Their TV channel “Dusk!” is also pretty high on their list of things they are getting right.
Dusk! (Aren’t you glad they included the exclamation point?) is a “female-friendly erotic channel” where all of the programming is decided upon by a panel of 2,000 women. Any woman can join the panel, which reviews content and provide explanation about what they liked and didn’t like.
Though you’re probably thinking this was created via divine inspiration, it was actually spawned in 2009 after a survey revealed 60% of women were watching pornography, despite being unsatisfied with what was available to them.
Fortunately, someone realized this was not a Netherlands-centric issue and Dusk is set to launch in the United States in 2014. Unfortunately, it’s a premium channel in the Netherlands, which means none of our poor souls who stream Game of Thrones via strange Russian matchmaking sites will actually be able to afford to get off in a feminist context.
Still–the concept behind the channel is awesome. It’s not saying “Here is porn for women. This is what you should be enjoying. You can thank me later.” Instead, the broadcasters are making decisions based on what women are actually enjoying. That’s definitely worth high-fiving someone about.
