Check Out Our Exclusive Interview with Artist and Hot Witch, Dame Darcy!

by BUST Magazine

I have been following Dame Darcy’s career for several years, ever since we met on a book and music tour with Lisa Crystal Carver. Dame Darcy has been writing and illustrating a hilariously mischievous and zany comic book series called Meat Cake since those wonder years, in addition to writing music; making films, videos, dolls and crafts; performing sea shanties on a banjo while dressed as a mermaid; producing shows; painting murals; hanging out with celebrities; freaking out jocks on reality TV shows; and, well, I don’t know if there’s anything this DIY Gemini witch princess doesn’t do. Once upon a time, she painted a giant unicorn on my living room wall as a housewarming gift. What a gal!

Her newest project, Handbook for Hot Witches, is here to take the guesswork out of things like making healthy raw food snacks and manifesting your dreams. There are even some re-written fairy tales with a feminist slant so that the girls win in the end on their own without having to rely on a prince to make their wishes come true. Disney should have been writing these stories decades ago!

I recently sat down with Dame Darcy at the gorgeous House of Collection in Williamsburg and asked her a few questions about her book, her fashion sense and her politics. It was a lot of fun, because in addition to being superbly talented, a feminist and a visionary artist with a cool name, she’s got a dazzling way with words.

And now, for a real life happy ending to this blurb: Dame Darcy will be celebrating her official New York book release party for Handbook for Hot Witches on Thursday, October 11th at Forbidden Planet Comics’ new location on 832 Broadway at 12th Street. What a great way to celebrate the International Day of the Girl.

Can’t make it? No big D! While she’s in town, she’ll also be presenting her books and original art at Smartclothes Gallery (154 Stanton Street in the Lower East Side) on Saturday, October 13th at 6:30 PM.
