BUST Reviews Figo! Organic Gelato

by BUST Magazine

Life at BUST HQ is already pretty sweet, but never more so than when we find a large shipment of ice cream at our door. The folks at Figo! Organic Gelato were nice enough to send us pints of their gelato to try out, and we were all too eager to take them up on the offer. Figo! is a brand new ice cream that “use a proprietary slow-churn process to create an ideal mixture of low air and butter fat, which lends to the gelato’s smooth, creamy and rich texture while creating under one-tenth of a percent of product waste, and a lower fat, premium product.” They’re certified organic, non-GMO, gluten free, and egg free.

BUST staff offers their thoughts on six of Figo!’s seven flavors:

Coconut Almond Chip:
This understated coconut gelato was one of the first flavors bookkeeper Amy Moore tried out, and she instantly fell in love. “That’s good,” she said. “Yummy, light, coconutty. Mmhmm. Wow. This should get me through the rest of the day.”

Chocolate Duet: “a blend of cocoa power and molten chocolate”
“This makes me wanna sing a duet,” senior editor Molly Simms said. Tiny chocolate shavings make this an upgrade on classic chocolate. “This is better than normal chocolate ice cream,” intern Sarah Fonder said. Publisher Laurie Henzel cosigns.

Pure Pistachio:
Pistachio has always been an underdog of ice cream flavors, so the reception of this real-deal take on it was bound to fall somewhere in the middle. “I did not care for the pistachio,” intern Shelby Thompson said. “A little too nutty.” Amy, on the other hand, was into it. “The pistachio’s weird– it’s good because the pistachios actually taste like pistachios.”

Cool Limone: “fresh lemon juice and zest”
This bright, summery lemon airs more on the sorbet side and comes out kinda like a grown-up version of those freezes from Six Flags. “It’s bittersweet, but really good,” said Lauren Del Negro of advertising sales & marketing.

Salted Caramel Cafe:
This flavor capitalizes on the sweet-and-salty trend that’s currently all over the place, and it does so very well. It’s mostly strong caramel with minimal salt and a nice coffee kick. “It tastes almost like coffee ice cream, but better,” said events and promotions coordinator Maggie Carr. This pint was the first to disappear and earned the label “caramel crack” from Christian Detres of the advertising team. “Salted caramel for the win,” said editor-in-chief Debbie Stoller. “‘FTW,’ as the kids would say.”

Chocolate Peanut Butter:
Nevertheless, Debbie’s heart belongs to this flavor. “Chocolate Peanut Butter FTD– ‘For The Debbie,'” she said. Our EIC immediately called dibs on this one and quickly declared it to be her favorite of the bunch. Amy also sang this ice cream’s praises. “That’s really good. First thing you taste is the peanut butter. Almost tastes like a Reese’s.” Are you sold yet?

These Figo! ice creams will hit natural food stores and supermarkets later this spring and we definitely recommend you try these out for your next night in. Our top pick is Salted Caramel Cafe.
