Facebook Has Removed The Page Supporting Rapist Brock Turner…But Why Did It Take So Long?

by Kailey Thompson

Facebook has removed a page in support of Brock Turner, a man convicted of sexual assault of an unconscious woman, who also happened to swim sometimes. The group called “Brock Turner Family Support,” wasn’t actually run by Turner or his family, according to Turner’s lawyer, but many of its posts made it sound like it was.

“It has been months and the accuser has yet to publicly come forward to face our son,” one post reads.

The page has been removed as of Wednesday afternoon, but some websites have posted screenshots of some posts, which you can also see below.

Warning: They’re infuriating.

Many counter groups have formed on Facebook with the goal of removing the group. One page, called “Delete the ‘Brock Turner Family Support’ Page,” has users sharing victorious messages with screenshots of Facebook responding to their reports.

One response from Facebook read: “We removed the Page you reported for harassment. Since it violated our Community Standards, we removed it. …”

It’s great that Facebook removed the page, but we want to know what took so long. Facebook quickly jumped on removing a Brock Turner meme that was floating around. It’s important to note Facebook did quickly apologize, saying, “This content was removed in error, and we are currently working to restore it. Our team processes millions of reports each week, and we sometimes get things wrong. We’re very sorry about this mistake.”

The page was up for at least two weeks — maybe longer — before Facebook removed it.
