Beatnik Babe

by intern Amber
If you love Amber Tamblyn (our Feb/Mar 09 cover girl) you will adore her even more when you pick up her new enthralling poetry book Bang Ditto, published by Manic D Press. Her work is smart, twisted, feminist and humorous. She lays out her heart and soul for you to touch and smell through the pages.
Amber summarizes that Bang Ditto is ‘a collection of poetry and prose chronicling my observations of a life spent in the Hollywood business and how that’s effected everything within me and everyone around me.’ She goes on to call the book a ‘risk worth taking.’
If you only know Ms. Tamblyn as an actress you will be surprised to know that this intellectual bombshell, who was raised by beatniks, has been writing and publishing her own poetry/art/photography books since she was 14! Now at 26, she has honed her craft and has gained praise winning a Borders Book Choice Award for her 2006 release, Free Stallion.
Here is an excerpt from Bang Ditto:

This is where you first handed me your music in a Walkman,
flicked off my light-switch eyes
and we camped out in each other’s hair.
You fogged the letters of a question
on the back of my neck with your breath.
Your knuckles rustled through
waste bins of my waist’s skin
till you found the thing
that had been ticking.
Pumping like a trout’s mouth
or the bellybutton of an Olympian…’
