Throughout the month of October, the BBC has focused on a special series of programming called “100 Women” that showcases the risks, challenges, and opportunities presented to women around the world. Today, that series wrapped up with a conference at BBC Headquarters in London that included talks with 100 influential women about feminism, gender gap, the quest for equality, and what it means to be a woman in the 21st century.
The event was live streamed on BBC’s website, and you can go back and watch the footage, ranging from discussions about women in Syria, to child brides, to defining feminism in the 21st century.
Sigridur Maria Egilsdottir, Icelandic debate champion, delivered the event’s closing speech, and gave an inspiring talk about ending inequality. She stressed the need for women’s education, and the need to not grow complacent with the advances made thusfar. “Although it may seem impossible to change outdated rules that stop girls being educated…” she said, “our world is ruled by little else than thoughts and ideas, and therefore it is within our power to change it.”
