Press circuits are a busy requirement of promoting a new movie – and as fans, we get that. And we kind of love it. I mean who doesn’t love seeing one of their favorite stars hilariously banter with some charismatic late night personality? For all of the world to see. Which may or may not have been scripted.
AOL’s BUILD Speaker Series is the cool older cousin of the hyper press circuit family. Though billed as a series that “bring[s] to life the concept of building brands” and “build[ing] ourselves”, it feels much more like a candid, casual conversation with captivating minds and performers. The series is stationed in AOL’s “raw space”, which sort of looks like a barely finished warehouse. They take their “building” mantra very literally (I loved it).
Luckily for me, I was able to join AOL for their Life After Beth Q&A with comedic goddess Aubrey Plaza, handsomely brooding co-star Dane Dehaan, and director Jeff Baena.
As expected, they packed the 30 minute hangout with plenty of the dry humor and sarcastic wit. The (almost) too eager moderator got the ball rolling and lead to some conversational gems. Though Dehaan and Baena were equally as charismatic and were a very important part of the conversation, I know why you’re here. It’s okay. You don’t have to feel guilty. Aubrey is the star. And we are all obsessed with her.
So, just for you, a few choice moments from Aubrey, your favorite master of dark humor:
- After Dehaan revealed his new emoji of choice is the “ghost with its tongue sticking out” because of the movie, Aubrey followed this nice promotional answer with “I like the tiny violin.”
- When asked about her zombie-inspired “eating” of the View cast, she ultimately chose Whoopi as the tastiest.
- She revealed that, like most of us, she doesn’t know the proper past tense of “wing it.” As she was describing that each zombie movie is just a personal take on the undead, she “wanged” her version of a zombie. “Wunged?” “Wing-ed?” (FYI, it actually is winged).
- When she accidentally spoiled a very crucial moment at the end of the film, she abruptly shouted out “I’m drunk!” Only for her would this excuse ever work out well.
- On a Parks and Recreation note, Aubrey has always wanted April to be a mother. Apparently, that will never be in the cards. On the bright side, we have three Knope-Wyatt babies to look forward to!
