On the list of badass villainesses, Maleficent from Disney’s animated Sleeping Beauty ranks pretty high. Needless to say, I couldn’t be more stoked she’s getting a “her side of the story” treatment in a live-action film scheduled for release next year. Based on Disney’s description of the film, it already sounds way cooler than you were just thinking:
“A beautiful, pure-hearted young woman, Maleficent has an idyllic life growing up in a peaceable forest kingdom, until one day when an invading army threatens the harmony of the land. Maleficent rises to be the land’s fiercest protector, but she ultimately suffers a ruthless betrayal—an act that begins to turn her pure heart to stone.”
A movie with a central female character who is powerful yet emotional?! Can it really be?!
I guess I won’t get my hopes up too too high just yet. After all, it’s directed by Robert Stromberg (production designer of Alice in Wonderland, Avatar, and Oz the Great and Powerful), so it’ll probably just be a lot of sparkly 3-D glasses crap.
But for now…let’s keep re-watching the teaser trailer and getting the chills!
