Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty Exhibit at the Met in NYC

by Kristina Uriegas-Reyes

I previously blogged about the opening of the Alexander McQueen exhibit and the fashion extravaganza that is the Met Gala, but the exhibit itself deserves an entry all its own. There are people who are undeservingly called “genius” and “true artist” once they’ve died, but Alexander McQueen was not one of them. From day one, McQueen was a breath of fresh air in the fashion industry, one for the books I’d say. Since his death in 2010, he’s become a tragic, iconic figure of fashion whose mark on the world is obviously still felt. From the armadillo shoes in Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance” video to the collection of hats inspired by his dear friend, Isabella Blow, he will be forever remembereds a true artist. His garments are genuine, wearable pieces of art so it’s only fitting that they be in one of the best museums in the world for all to see. It gives me fashion butterflies just thinking about seeing all his amazing works in person!

In McQueen related news, I also recently found a really neat video of Daphne Guinness dressing for the Met in a Barney’s Madison Ave. window. Who knew getting dressed could be such an art event? I officially would like a soundtrack of epicness whenever I get dressed each morning!

The gorgeous stage display acted as the launching of Barney’s NY collaboration with Daphne Guinness, who curated a selection of Alexander McQueen pieces from her private collection as well as from the collection of Isabella Blow to create twenty-six complete looks, ten of which were created by McQueen himself. Over the course of the six-week installation, Ms. Guinness will return to Barneys several times to dress in artistic, epic fashion while it’s being live-streamed at thewindow.barneys.com. A short film on her life with be released following the collaboration.
