Is Abortion Safer Than Childbirth?

by Intern Chrislande

Interesting news from the North Carolina School of Medicine at Chapel Hill–a study being published in the February issue of Obstetrics and Gynecology by Dr. David Grimes and his team of researchers show that between the years 1998 and 2005, the risk of death associated with live births (full-term pregnancies) was significantly higher than those of documented legal abortions.

Though the risk of death is low for both procedures, live births had a rate of 8.8 deaths per 100,000 women while legal abortions averaged at 0.6 deaths per 100,000 women. Between 1998 and 2005, only 64 deaths were reported from legal abortions to the CDC. Though I’m saddened by how dangerous childbirth can be for women (1 death is too many), this study has given me solid facts to throw at my pro-life friends and family members when they swear to glitter that abortions kill women.

And guess who just extended their celebration of the anniversary of Roe v. Wade for another week? “No more wire hangers” t-shirts for everyone.
