A Walk of Shame You Can be Proud of….

by BUST Magazine

Slut Walk NYC is a grassroots mission doing its part to end sexual and domestic violence to women all around the globe. The movement grew from a comment by a police officer who told women the best way to protect themselves against sexual violence would be to stop dressing like sluts. Understandably outraged, over 3000 women exercised their rights to free assembly and speech and marched to show support for the end of discrimination. Marches are now world wide with successful runs in London, New Delhi, Toronto, Nashville and other locations. Slut Walk not only wants to promote the end of discrimination against women but intends to challenge the sexual, racist, homophobic, class, status prejudices that people have that hurt us all everyday.

Slut Walk NYC is occurring at a meaningful time. Rapes and sexual assaults are up 24% since last year in the city. Rape culture is often made worse by the media with victim-blaming by the people that are supposed to protect them like the courts, media and law enforcement. Slut Walk supports women and men in their right to wear, say, flirt, love, identify and work however one chooses without fear. That is what Slut Walk is all about, choice and respect. Join this growing movement in New York City’s Union Square on 14th Street October 1st 2011 at 12 pm. For more information and how you can help log onto Slut Walk
