7 Awesome Podcasts That Challenge Gender Norms

by Livi Burke

In a world where our society is constantly reinforcing gender norms and encouraging stereotypical behavior, there are these beautiful little niches of the internet that go above and beyond social norms. Podcasts are super popular right now, and they’re a great way to learn about such a wide variety of topics and interests. These podcasts do a great job of analyzing certain aspects of entertainment while also being unique in ways that one might not normally see!

1. Gilmore Guys

Gilmore Guys is a podcast run by Kevin T. Porter and Demi Adejuyigbe. Kevin is a long-time veteran when it comes to knowing all things Gilmore, and Demi is watching the show for the very first time. Together, the two of them discuss each and every Gilmore Girls episode as well as throwing in plenty of funny remarks and comments here and there! These guys are seriously so funny, and so fun to listen to! For any first time Gilmore viewers or hardcore Gillys, this podcast is a must!

2.PLGM: Pretty Little Grown Men

For all of you die-hard PLL fans, this podcast is a must! The intro to this podcast is one of my all time favorites. It starts off with hardcor rock music with a crazy electric guitar solo, and segues into a discussion about a show that could not be more different! What makes this podcast so great is that unlike other Pretty Little Liars podcasts, the guys really focus on the structure and plot of the show when discussing the episodes. Not that a good Spoby rant isn’t fun every now and then, but these guys go all in!

3. Fangirls Going Rogue

Fangirls Going Rogue is the first Star Wars podcast that is exclusively hosted by fangirls! Led by Tricia Barr, Teresa Delgado, and Sarah Woloski, this podcast dives deep into all things Star Wars. These girls do everything from discussions about the series to interviews with Star Wars VIPs. Who says Star Wars is just for boys?

4. Gossip Guys

I don’t know what it is about funny, quirky guys that talk about girly teen dramas, but I seriously cannot get enough of podcasts like these! These guys aren’t afraid to make fun of the undoubtedly cheesy moments in this show, but are also totally unashamed of the fact that they are two guys that love a good Gossip Girl episode!

5. Girl On Guy

Tyler covers topics that guys love while also interviewing an incredible array of people of all genders. In these interviews, Tyler and her guests discuss their careers, inspirations, and their motivations in life.

6. For Colored Nerds

There is nothing we intersectional feminists hate more than stereotypes. Thankfully the stereotype that only boys can be nerds didn’t keep Brittany and Eric from making this amazing podcast! On For Colored Nerds, best friends Brittany and Eric dive into a wide variety of topics such as reality television, Black history, and even social justice issues that so many of us are just too afraid to talk about!

7. That’s What She Said With Sarah Spain

Last but not least is That’s What She Said With Sarah Spain. This podcast is a little different from the other podcasts on this list. Yet, this is still a podcast that one would definitely recommend! Sarah Spain shares her opinions on some of the biggest sports stories in the world. She also conducts discussions about all things ESPN, as well as interviewing some of the most well known names in sports.
